This project aims to:
Develop and utilize audio-recorded English storybooks as alternative materials for the Aral Reading Program, specifically targeting struggling learners to improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and engagement
Description
Reading proficiency remains a critical foundation for academic success. However, many learners, especially those who are struggling, face challenges in decoding, comprehension, and engagement with traditional print materials. In response, Project LISTEN (Learning made Interesting to Struggling Tutees through Exciting Needs-based interventions) proposes the development and utilization of audio-recorded English storybooks as an alternative instructional materials for the Aral Reading Program.
To provide a background, Project LISTEN 1.0 began by providing Bluetooth speakers to improve learners' comprehensive skills by listening to recorded reading materials. LISTEN 2.0, on the other hand, focused on improving reading proficiency through daily reading and ensuring enhancement of comprehension skills as progress. LISTEN 3.0 highlighted the use of technology through the storybooks via a flipbook. Delineating the need for another innovation is the birth of Project LISTEN 4.0, whose main objective is to develop digital resources through audio-recorded storybooks, an alternative instructional materials for Aral Reading Program learners as its focus.
These digital resources (audio-recorded storybooks) aim to provide accessible, engaging, and structured reading support that complements existing literacy interventions. By integrating audio narration with story content, learners can develop listening comprehension, vocabulary, and reading fluency in a scaffolded and enjoyable manner. The project is also designed to be implemented across Term 1, 2, and 3 with competencies and activities aligned to the developmental progression of reading skills.
In line with DepEd’s thrust on learner-centered, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate instruction, the use of exciting audio learning materials serves as an effective strategy to enhance teaching and learning in the primary grades especially for starting and struggling tutees. Audio materials such as recorded stories, songs, rhymes, phonics exercises, and guided listening activities support the development of listening comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, and phonological awareness, which are essential components of early literacy.
Moreover, this project supports DepEd’s advocacy for inclusive education, as audio learning materials benefit diverse learners, including struggling readers, beginning readers, and learners with varied learning styles.
Aligned with DepEd’s promotion of technology integration and innovative teaching strategies, audio learning materials provide accessible and cost-effective instructional tools that can be utilized both in classroom instruction and home-based learning. These materials help sustain learner interest, improve attention span, and encourage active participation, which are essential in achieving the intended learning competencies for Key Stage 1.
Therefore, Project LISTEN 4.0 highlights the implementation of exciting, age-appropriate audio learning supplementary materials to support the attainment of DepEd learning standards, strengthen foundational literacy skills, and create a supportive and engaging learning environment for Key Stage 1 learners. This initiative contributes to DepEd’s goal of ensuring quality, equitable, and meaningful basic education for all Filipino learners.
